Jordan is full of biblical references from Amman, that is mentioned in the bible many times, to Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot and his wife, and Jordan's most revered site, Mount Nebo, where Byzantine Christians built a small church as this is where Moses was buried. From the outside of the church, which was expanded in later times, you can look across the Dead Sea to Jerusalem and Bethlehem. At Machaerus is the hilltop stronghold of Herod the Great whose son, Herod Antipas, ordered the death of John the Baptist.
