Cairo .......
Cairo is home to the great pyramids of Giza, the only remaining wonder of the Ancient world, and the treasures of Tutankhamen which in themselves is enough of a reason to visit Cairo but there is so much more to this city that forms the heart of Egypt.
Within Cairo modern air conditioned shopping centres nestle side by side with traditional markets and bazaars with a visit to the Khan El Khalili, the oldest bazaar in Cairo an absolute must. It dates back to 1382 and is built on the spice and incense trade route. Here the exotic smells of oriental spices still waft through the narrow passages and mingle with the aroma of rich coffee and the wisps of smoke from the sheesha "hubble bubble" pipes. Stay for a while and take in the colourful rich cottons, shiny copper and brass ornaments and magnificent gold shops.
Dining in Cairo is a joy with quality restaurants throughout the city as well as floating restaurants some permanently moored but why not dine whilst enjoying a daytime or evening trip along the Nile.
Visits to the Egyptian Museum and the treasures of Tutankhamen, the Pyramids of Giza and the great Sphinx are a must but there is also Coptic Cairo, the Muhammad Ali Mosque with its covering of Alabaster that stands above several other mosques dating back to the middle ages, stop for a coffee at the Cairo Tower with its rotating restaurant and views over the whole city, the Pharaonic Village that sits on an island in the Nile where you can see a recreation of life back in Egypt during the time of the Pharaohs and with so many other places you can take in as little or as much as you wish.
Step just outside Cairo and visit the Necropolis of Saqqara which includes the famous step pyramid of King Djoser and also visit Memphis, the capital of Egypt before Cairo, which is mostly lost but the open air museum is well worth a visit.
